As we already know that Google allows us to back up our text messages via Google One, but it can’t actually back up this data via Google Messages itself.

Google Messages Will Have Backup, Restore Feature: How It Works?

Google Messages Getting Backup Feature

Considering this issue, Google turns out to be working on a backup and restore solution for the app.

If you are wondering about this app here in this article, you will get all the details regarding how it works.

After going through the latest beta version of the Google Messages app (version 20241118_02_RC00), the sources discovered numerous references to a backup and restore option in the app.

Backup For Conversations, Media, and More

The Google Messages could prompt you to activate backup functionality, but the option should also be accessible via the app’s settings menu under “backup & sync” as revealed in the images referred to by the sources.

Further, they reveal plenty of details about how Google Messages backup and restore should work.

This is so confirmed by the company saying “conversations, media, and more” can be backed up and restored.

Besides this, the service provider also  uses end-to-end encryption for your backup.

It is noteworthy here that this understandably requires your device to have screen lock enabled.

While talking about this, Google confirmed that your conversations will be automatically restored after signing in to Messages, so you don’t need to manually restore your chats in theory.

In addition to this, the service provider  could also let you “delete and start” a new backup or use Messages without backup functionality if your backup can’t be restored to your device.

One of its images reveals a toggle to only sync photos and videos via Wi-Fi.

This looks like a handy addition in line with other messaging apps, as it  allows users to sync their text history over mobile data while preserving your mobile data cap.

So far, the company has not given any input on a release date for this feature.

Although, it would be a very convenient addition to Messages.

This will be a pleasant addition after we discovered several more features coming to Google Messages such as the ability to choose photo quality before sending, sensitive content warnings for NSFW images, and a new way to check timestamps.
