An employee of a BPO company in Bengaluru allegedly stole the personal data of a female colleague which he used to take a personal loan of Rs 2 lakh in her name without her consent.
The accused, Lokeshwar Sugumaran, is being sought by police.
Background
He was responsible for safeguarding mobile phones that employees deposit before entering the workspace.
This gave him open access to the devices of all employees stored securely in lockers under his supervision.
In this particular case, during working hours, he peeked at the pattern she entered to unlock her phone which he used to access her Aadhaar and PAN details.
Bank’s negligence
The bank failed to conduct thorough verification and granted the accused a loan of Rs 2 lakh.
It deposited the amount into a bank account he had opened under the woman’s name.
Woman remained oblivious
The woman was unaware of this for nearly a year until she started receiving messages and calls asking for the loan’s monthly repayment installment.
When she raised the matter in the office, Sugumaran came clean and assured her he would promptly resolve the matter.
However he failed to do so and cut off contact with her, after which the victim approached the police.
