Foxconn’s Yuzhan Technology (India), a unit of the Taiwanese contract manufacturer, secured approval for a massive Rs 13,180 crore investment in Tamil Nadu. This project, expected to generate 14,000 jobs, will focus on assembling smartphone display modules, with Apple being the primary beneficiary. This is Foxconn’s first investment of this kind in the state, marking a significant step toward boosting local manufacturing for Apple’s supply chain.
Foxconn’s decision to invest in Tamil Nadu aligns with its plans to reduce dependency on Chinese imports and expand local production capabilities. The assembly unit will be located at the ESR Oragadam Industrial & Logistics Park near Chennai, complementing Foxconn’s existing smartphone assembly operations.
Largest Investment Among 14 Projects
Foxconn’s Rs 13,180 crore investment was the largest among 14 projects approved by the Tamil Nadu cabinet. The cumulative investment across all 14 projects totals Rs 38,698.80 crore, with job creation expected to reach 46,931 positions. This meeting marked a significant moment for Tamil Nadu, being the first cabinet session after Udhayanidhi Stalin was appointed Deputy Chief Minister.
The investments reflect Tamil Nadu’s strategic focus on industrial growth, particularly in high-tech sectors like mobile phone components, PCB manufacturing, and renewable energy.
Boosting Employment and Economic Growth
Foxconn’s project is not only a major win for job creation in Tamil Nadu but also for India’s overall efforts to become a global electronics manufacturing hub. Foxconn’s assembly unit will be designed to supply components to other contract manufacturers like Pegatron and Tata Electronics, reducing reliance on imports from China.
In total, the cabinet’s decision is expected to drive the production of mobile phone components, luxury cars, renewable energy equipment, and more, promoting technological innovation and industrial diversification in the state.
Transforming Tamil Nadu’s Manufacturing Landscape
This wave of investments, especially Foxconn’s, underscores Tamil Nadu’s growing role in India’s manufacturing sector. With state government support, industries ranging from electronics to renewable energy are poised for exponential growth, creating new opportunities for the local workforce and transforming the region into a tech manufacturing powerhouse.
