The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rolled out OneTag, a new FASTag portability service that allows vehicle owners to switch their FASTag issuer bank without removing or replacing the physical FASTag sticker on their vehicle.

The service is now available through the Rajmargyatra mobile app, giving FASTag users greater flexibility when changing banks.

How OneTag Works

Earlier, changing the bank associated with a FASTag generally required users to close the existing tag and obtain a new physical tag.

With OneTag, the same FASTag and FASTag ID remain linked to the vehicle even after the issuer bank is changed.

Users can log into the Rajmargyatra app, enter their vehicle registration number and check whether their FASTag is eligible for portability.

If eligible, the existing issuer bank provides a six-digit Mobile Verification Code to authorise the request. Users can then select a new issuer and complete the required verification and wallet onboarding process.

Old Wallet Gets Closed

Once portability is successfully completed, the previous issuer bank closes the old FASTag wallet. The available balance is refunded after applicable adjustments.

However, users cannot immediately switch again. A six-month cooling period applies before the same FASTag can be ported to another issuer.

This makes the choice of the new issuing bank important, particularly for users who regularly use FASTag for highway travel.

13 Crore FASTags Issued

FASTag has become the primary electronic toll collection system on India’s national highways.

According to NHAI, around 13 crore FASTags have been issued, with penetration exceeding 98%. Around 6 crore tags are currently active.

OneTag is intended to make the FASTag ecosystem more interoperable while reducing the need to manufacture, dispatch and replace physical tags whenever users change issuers.

Rajmargyatra Gets More FASTag Services

OneTag adds another facility to the Rajmargyatra app, which already provides services such as the FASTag Annual Pass, FASTag Local Pass and emergency highway helpline 1033.

The initiative has been developed jointly by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), promoted by NHAI, and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Move Towards Barrier-Free Tolling

OneTag is also part of the government’s broader effort to modernise electronic toll collection.

The next stated objective is barrier-free tolling, using technologies such as artificial intelligence and automatic number-plate recognition to reduce stoppages and waiting times at toll plazas.

Summary

NHAI has launched OneTag on the Rajmargyatra app, allowing FASTag users to switch their issuing bank without replacing the physical sticker on their vehicle. The FASTag ID remains unchanged, while the old wallet is closed and its balance refunded after applicable adjustments. A six-month cooling period applies before another switch can be made.
