Dirty Earphones Can Cause Ear Infection, Reduce Your Hearing Ability

Prolonger Usage to Unclean Earphones

Prolonged use of unclean headsets can lead to growth of harmful microorganisms into the ear canal. The risk of ear infections is increased in this case, which can potentially lead to inflammation and fluid build-up in the ear. Over the period of time, this recurrent infections or persistent irritation can lead to hearing issues, temporary or permanent.

Shared headsets can result in amplification of risk transmission since many users introduce diverse microbiomes to the device which can lead to severe infections.

As per the Consultant ENT and Sleep Disorder Specialist of Ruby Hall Clinic Pune, Dr. Murarji Ghadge, “The presence of bacteria on earphones can exacerbate skin-related problems in and around the ears. Skin irritation or allergic reactions may occur, further compromising the overall health of the auditory system. Furthermore, individuals with compromised immune systems or pre-existing ear conditions may be particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of unclean headsets. For instance, those with eczema or dermatitis may experience aggravated skin issues around the ears, potentially impacting the ear’s natural defence mechanisms and making it more susceptible to infections.”

How to Maintain Hearing Hygiene?

In order to mitigate the hearing issues, it is crucial that we maintain a strict hygiene. Regular cleaning or disinfecting of headsets in addition to abstinence of shared earphones can keep away the bacterial transmission.

Furthermore, taking breaks from prolonged usage of same also allows the time for ears to breathe and also minimize the moisture accumulation leading to healthier auditory environment.
