India’s high-speed rail network is set to expand further, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi approving the proposed Northern Corridor of the bullet train project. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the development on October 31, 2026, saying the project could reduce travel time between Delhi and Varanasi to approximately three hours and 35 minutes.

The announcement was made in Varanasi, where Vaishnaw and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also flagged off a new Vande Bharat Sleeper Express service connecting Varanasi and New Delhi.

North Bullet Train Corridor to Connect Major Cities

The proposed high-speed rail corridor will connect Delhi with several important cities across northern and eastern India. The planned route includes Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Patna and Siliguri, before extending towards Guwahati.

The project is expected to improve connectivity between major commercial centres, educational institutions, tourist destinations and religious cities.

According to Vaishnaw, the corridor will be developed under the Make in India initiative, with Indian workers and engineers playing a significant role in its construction.

Delhi to Agra in 59 Minutes, Lucknow in Just Over Two Hours

The proposed corridor could significantly reduce travel time between several major cities.

The estimated journey times shared by the Railway Minister include:

  • Delhi to Agra: 59 minutes
  • Delhi to Kanpur: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Delhi to Lucknow: 2 hours 12 minutes
  • Lucknow to Varanasi: 1 hour 21 minutes
  • Varanasi to Delhi: 3 hours 35 minutes

These travel times are expected once the proposed high-speed rail corridor becomes operational.

The project could offer a faster alternative to conventional trains and make inter-city travel more convenient for business travellers, students, tourists and families.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Launched Between Delhi and Varanasi

Alongside the bullet train announcement, the Railway Minister and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister flagged off the new Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between Varanasi and New Delhi.

The sleeper service is expected to improve overnight travel between the two cities, offering passengers a more comfortable option for long-distance journeys.

The government also announced new MEMU train services to improve connectivity within Varanasi and between Varanasi and Prayagraj.

What the Bullet Train Project Could Mean for Passengers

The Northern Corridor could transform travel across northern India by reducing journey times and improving access to major cities.

However, the project is still at the planning stage, and the announcement does not establish a construction schedule or an operational launch date.

If completed as proposed, the corridor could make high-speed rail a practical alternative for many passengers travelling between Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states.

India’s proposed bullet train network is expected to support regional development, tourism and business activity while bringing major cities closer together.
