A fresh debate over India’s ethanol-blended petrol programme has emerged after Delhi’s taxi and tourist transport operators announced a protest march to Parliament. These include reviewing the mandatory 80 kmph speed limit for tourist vehicles, reconsidering vehicle scrappage policies affecting older commercial vehicles, revisiting restrictions on BS-IV diesel tourist vehicles, auditing the implementation of Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD) and panic buttons, and reducing high toll charges.
According to the association, addressing these issues would improve operational efficiency and reduce financial burdens on transport businesses.
Government Continues to Support Ethanol Programme
The Centre has consistently maintained that the ethanol blending programme has undergone extensive scientific validation and testing before implementation. The government argues that ethanol blending helps reduce crude oil imports, improves energy security, lowers carbon emissions and supports India’s agricultural economy by creating demand for ethanol feedstock.
Officials have also stated that the rollout has been backed by technical studies and consultations with automobile manufacturers and research institutions. However, transport operators insist that their real-world experiences deserve equal attention and are hoping the upcoming Parliament march will encourage constructive dialogue between policymakers and industry stakeholders.
