GST Network (GSTN) announced that it has geocoded 18 million addresses of registered businesses, and this feature is now available for all states and union territories (UTs). Geocoding enables the precise identification of the location of registered entities and helps identify fraudulent registrations.
GSTN Implements Geocoding Process Nationwide, Enhancing Address Accuracy and Verification
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) had previously conducted a geocoding pilot in select states. In an update to businesses, GSTN informed them that the functionality for geocoding the principal place of business address is now live across all states and UTs.
Geocoding is a process that converts an address or description of a location into geographic coordinates. Its implementation in GSTN aims to ensure accurate address details in their records and streamline the address verification process.
GSTN Successfully Geocodes 18 Million Business Addresses, Ensuring Accuracy and Standardization
According to GSTN, they have successfully geocoded over 18 million addresses of principal places of business. Additionally, all new addresses registered since March 2022 are automatically geocoded at the time of registration, ensuring accuracy and standardization of address data from the start.
Businesses can access the geocoding functionality within the portal, and the system-generated geocoded address will be displayed. Businesses have the option to either accept the generated address or update it according to their requirements. In cases where the system-generated geocoded address is unavailable, a blank field will be displayed, and businesses can directly update the geocoded address, as per GSTN’s statement.
