Breathtaking Images Of Mumbai-Pune Expressway As It Turns 25!

Let’s revisit the expressway, as it completes its silver jubilee.

25 Years of the Legendary Mumbai Pune Expressway!

As we all are well aware, the distance between the two major cities of India, Mumbai and Pune is only 150 kilometers. However, before this expressway was built, half a day of traveling would be required to cover the distance.

And now, two and a half to three hours do the trick!

All thanks to the 94.5 kilometers long Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai Pune Expressway!

Mumbai Pune Expressway: First Ever Access Controlled Expressway of India

The Mumbai Pune Expressway is an access-controlled highway, which was quite unheard of before the day it became a reality. An access-controlled highway is where entry points are limited and regulated – drivers can’t get on the highway anywhere they please. This ensures a regular flow of traffic, and getting to the destination on time therefore.

This was the first of a kind expressway in India, and the project was spearheaded by the then Maharashtra PWD minister, Nitin Gadkari along with MSRDC. While the initial sections were opened in 1999, the entire highway was entirely opened for travelers in 2001.

55 Companies Placed Bids To Build The Mumbai Pune Expressway

What is even more interesting is that when the project was first proposed, it generated so much interest that when tenders were invited for the construction, a staggering 55 companies placed bids for its construction.

In the end, it was awarded to IRB Infra, who completed the Mumbai-Pune Expressway within four years.

While the Mumbai Pune Expressway did set a precedent, Maharashtra had to wait an excruciating 23 years for the next expressway to be built in the state.

Initially, when the traffic was low and not as much as what we see today, the transition from the old route to the newly built Mumbai Pune Expressway made the journey quite enjoyable and picturesque, thanks to the sturdy yet smooth roads.

The pioneering Mumbai Pune Expressway has opened the door to future access-controlled expressways in India, a true makeover of Indian infrastructure!
