Bengaluru’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Airport, which ceased commercial operations in 2008, is set for a major overhaul. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has approved a master plan to revamp the facility, aiming to ease air traffic in the fast-growing city.
HAL Airport: A Glimpse into the Past
Before 2008, HAL Airport served as Bengaluru’s primary air traffic hub, handling over 10 lakh passengers during its final year of commercial operations in 2007-08. With the inauguration of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Devanahalli, HAL shifted its focus to servicing defence, VIP, and private aircraft.
What the Master Plan Entails
The AAI’s master plan focuses on modernizing HAL Airport to cater to the growing demand for air travel. Key features of the revamp include:
- Passenger Handling Capacity: By 2047, HAL Airport aims to accommodate 40 lakh passengers annually. During peak hours, it can manage up to 2,500 passengers.
- Infrastructure Development: A six-story multi-level car parking facility with a 500-vehicle capacity will be built. The road in front of the terminal will be widened from two to four lanes for better traffic flow.
- Runway and Aircraft Parking: The existing 3,306-meter runway will remain unchanged. The airport already has 30 aircraft parking spots, ensuring smooth operations for both civilian and regional flights.
Addressing Bengaluru’s Growing Needs
As Bengaluru expands, the demand for additional air travel facilities continues to rise. HAL Airport’s reopening will complement KIA’s operations, alleviating air traffic congestion. Moreover, the airport’s potential role in the Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN) will boost connectivity to smaller cities.
Timeline and Future Prospects
The exclusivity agreement with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) prevents other airports from commercial operations within a 150-km radius until May 24, 2033. However, HAL Airport’s preparations indicate its readiness to serve civilian operations sooner.
Enhancing Regional Connectivity
Once operational, the revamped HAL Airport is expected to serve as a hub for regional air travel, significantly benefiting commuters and enhancing Bengaluru’s reputation as a vital economic and technological center.
