Basically, this initiative is aimed to provide Mumbaikars with enhanced comfort while tackling the sweltering heat and overcrowded conditions of the city’s lifeline.

Besides this, this initiative of transitioning to AC trains is expected to modernise the rail network while improving the passenger experience.

It will also set a benchmark for urban mobility across India.

This is exciting news for the Mumbaikars as Mumbai’s local trains have long been an integral part of the city’s identity, carrying not just passengers but also its stories, aspirations, and culture.

Fascinating Facts About Mumbai Local Trains

While talking about Mumbai locals, there are many fascinating facts about Mumbai locals that make them an iconic symbol of the Mumbai City. Let’s go through some of them.

Everyday, Mumbai locals transport over 7.5 million passengers hence making it one of the busiest suburban railway networks in the world.

Its railway network spans 390 kilometres, with three main lines including the Western, Central, and Harbour lines, connecting the city’s farthest corners.

Considering the railway’s history in India, the first-ever train in the country ran between Mumbai and Thane on April 16, 1853, marking the beginning of Indian Railways.

In order to ensure the safety and convenience for female passengers, Mumbai introduced women-only local trains in 1992.

Despite the city’s population and chaos, Mumbai locals are renowned for their punctuality, with an average frequency of just 3–4 minutes during peak hours.
