Apple has introduced Apple Upgrade, a new leasing programme that allows customers to use the latest iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch models by paying a fixed monthly fee instead of purchasing the devices outright. Backed by Klarna, the programme also lets users upgrade to a newer device at the end of the lease by simply returning their current one.

The service is currently available only in the United States and replaces Apple’s long-running iPhone Upgrade Program.
How Apple Upgrade Works
Customers can choose an eligible Apple device, select Apple Upgrade during checkout and complete a lease application through Klarna.
Lease terms include:
- 12 or 24 months for iPhone and Apple Watch
- 24 or 36 months for iPad and Mac
At the end of the lease, users can:
- Upgrade to a newer Apple device by returning the existing one
- Return the device and leave the programme
- Purchase the device by paying the remaining value
Apple also allows users to trade in an existing device when enrolling for the first time to reduce their monthly payments.
Monthly Prices Start From $17.99
Apple says the programme offers affordable monthly payments across its product lineup.
Starting prices include:
- iPhone 17e: From $17.99/month
- iPhone 17: From $22.99/month
- iPhone Air: From $28.99/month
- iPhone 17 Pro: From $31.99/month
Macs, iPads and Apple Watches are also available under similar lease plans with pricing depending on the selected model and lease duration.
AppleCare Not Included
Unlike the previous iPhone Upgrade Program, AppleCare+ is not included with Apple Upgrade.
Customers who want accidental damage protection or theft coverage must purchase AppleCare separately. Apple says adding AppleCare can also help avoid damage charges when returning a leased device.
Credit Check And Eligibility
Apple Upgrade is available only to eligible US residents aged 18 or older.
Applicants must complete a soft credit check through Klarna, which does not affect their credit score. They also need a valid US billing address, Social Security Number and an eligible debit or credit card.
A Shift Towards Subscription-Style Hardware
With Apple Upgrade, the company is moving closer to a subscription-style ownership model for its hardware.
Instead of paying the full cost upfront, customers can continuously use the latest Apple products through predictable monthly payments and periodic upgrades. Apple believes the new programme will make premium devices more accessible while encouraging users to stay within the Apple ecosystem.
Summary
Apple has launched Apple Upgrade, a new US-only leasing programme that lets customers lease iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple Watches through Klarna with monthly payments starting at $17.99. Users can upgrade, return or purchase their device at the end of the lease, while AppleCare remains an optional add-on rather than being included in the monthly cost.
