As per a report, after having generated one lakh direct jobs in the past 19 months, Apple has become the single largest creator of jobs in the electronics sector.
The report further detailed that these employment opportunities have been created by the tech company’s vendors in India as well as their ecosystem of component suppliers who help in the manufacture of iPhones under the government’s smartphone Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
One Lakh Jobs Created in India by Apple under PLI Scheme
It is after the inception of the PLI scheme that majority of new jobs have been created in the past 19 months.
Three vendors of Apple of who assemble iPhone, namely, Foxconn Hon Hai, Pegatron and Wistron have together generated 60 percent of the new jobs.
Notably, this far exceeds their second-year commitment to generate news jobs under the scheme by roughly 7,000 new jobs.
The remainder of 40% new jobs are created by Apple’s entire ecosystem which includes suppliers of components and chargers.
The report said that 40,000 additional jobs have been generated by their component suppliers which include the likes of Tata Electronics, Salcomp, Avary, Foxlink. Sunwoda, and Jabil.
This data is as per reported by the three vendors and the companies in the Apple ecosystem who are required to file the employment numbers on a regular basis with government authorities.
Let’s dig further deeper..
Out of the 1 lakh jobs that are generated, it is the Tamil Nadu-based Foxconn Hon Hai which is leading the pack with creating over 35,500 jobs or one third of total jobs generated.
Second in the list is Pegatron with 14,000 jobs. Notably, Pegatron has done this feat in this year, which is also its first financial year.
As many as 12,800 jobs are generated by Wistron, which is located in Karnataka.
However, there is no comments from Apple’s spokesperson regarding these numbers.
Moving on to the component suppliers of the supply chain, then it is the Tata Electronics that is key component supplier for mechanical parts who has employed substantial numbers of employees.
As per the reports, over 11,000 employments are created by Salcomp, alongwith Jabil, Foxlink, and Sunwoda.
As per a press release in October 2020, it was estimated there almost 2 lakhs direct jobs shall be created within the 5 years of inception of the smartphone PLI scheme.
3 Lakh Indirect Jobs Created?
It was also estimated by the government, that for every direct job, as many as 3 indirect jobs were also created in the electronics manufacturing.
If we go by this calculation, that the numbers of indirect jobs created by 1 lakh direct jobs creation, would be three lakhs.
As per the India Cellular and Electronics Association, the total number of jobs created directly and indirectly by mobile device manufacturers and their suppliers is around two million over seven years.
Within a month in December 2022, Apple became the first company to have exported over $1 billion worth of iPhones.
Over Rs 30,000 crore of exports was clocked in the period of nine months from April to December 2022. This as per the reports, accounted around 40 percent of the total smartphone exports in value from the country.
