Airtel Increases Entry Level Tariff Across India
Airtel is the sole telecom provider to have raised the entry-level tariff to this level across all 22 telecom circles in India.
As of May 31, 2023, according to the latest report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released on August 1st, 2023, Airtel has demonstrated continuous growth in its wireless subscriber base across all circles in India, except Kolkata. This expansion has occurred despite the implementation of tariff hikes by the company.
According to TRAI’s data in May 2023, Airtel added approximately 1.3 million wireless subscribers, bringing the total wireless subscriber base to 372.3 million. Airtel’s market share in terms of wireless subscribers stands at 32.57 percent. The company also witnessed growth in rural subscribers, with a total count of 180.99 million.
Airtel Has Highest Proportion of Active Wireless Subscribers
Airtel stands out with the highest proportion of active wireless subscribers (VLR) at 100.09 percent in May 2023, the highest in the industry. This percentage represents subscribers who have roamed into a specific area served by the network.
The company recorded the highest number of wireless subscriber additions in various circles, including Rajasthan, Mumbai, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, West Bengal, and Bihar.
Airtel continues to lead in several circles, including Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, North East, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh East.
Despite tariff hikes, Airtel’s wireless subscriber growth remains robust. In contrast, competitors are trying to mitigate the impact of tariff hikes by bundling more benefits into plans and indirectly reducing tariffs across all segments. Airtel’s approach of gradually adding subscribers has maintained its positive momentum.
