The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) warns that up to 8 million UK workers could lose their jobs due to artificial intelligence (AI) under current government policies. AI already affects 11% of tasks in the UK, potentially rising to 60% with deeper integration. Part-time, entry-level, and back-office roles are at highest risk, but even higher-paying jobs could be impacted.
Policy Decisions Crucial in AI Integration
Carsten Jung, senior economist at IPPR, emphasizes that government, employers, and unions must make crucial design decisions to manage AI’s impact effectively. Without proactive action, a “jobs apocalypse” may become a reality. The government acknowledges AI’s influence on employment and calls for upskilling workers to adapt to technological changes. However, policy decisions will determine whether AI adoption leads to job losses or contributes to economic growth.
LinkedIn Research Reveals UK’s AI Skill Gap
LinkedIn research indicates that the UK lags behind countries like India, the US, and Germany in AI skills. Only a fraction of UK businesses invest in upskilling their workforce, with a relatively small number possessing AI skills. Women and young people are particularly vulnerable to displacement by AI, as they are often employed in tasks most affected by technology. Firms may reduce graduate job openings and rely more on AI for entry-level tasks.
