India Boosts Domestic Electronics Manufacturing to Cut Imports and Build Self-Reliance

Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the projects approved under the first tranche focus on manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCBs), copper-clad laminates, camera modules, andpolypropylene films. He emphasized that this marks India’s transition from assembling finished products to manufacturing critical components and modules domestically, which will substantially reduce the country’s import dependence. The initiative is expected to cut India’s import bill by ₹18,000–20,000 crore annuallyand enable38–40% domestic value addition.

Among the approved companies, Kaynes Circuits leads with four proposals covering PCBs, HDI boards, camera modules, and laminates. SRF will manufacture polypropylene films used in capacitors, while Syrma Strategic Electronics and Ascent Circuits will produce multi-layer PCBs essential for industries like consumer electronics, medical devices, automotive, and aerospace.

ECMS Projects to Make India Self-Reliant and a Global Electronics Export Hub

Tamil Nadu will host five of the seven projects, with Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh each housing one. Vaishnaw stated that these new plants will meet 20% of India’s multi-layer PCB demand, 15% of camera module demand, and ensure 100% self-sufficiency in copper-clad laminates and polypropylene films, which are currently imported. Furthermore, 60% of the production from these plants will be exported, boosting India’s presence in the global electronics supply chain.

The ECMS scheme, launched on April 8, 2025, with an outlay of ₹22,919 crores, aims to build a robust domestic ecosystem for electronic components and strengthen India’s export capabilities, moving the nation closer to becoming a global electronics manufacturing hub.

Summary:

The government approved seven projects under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) with ₹5,532 crore investment and ₹44,406 crore production target. Focused on PCBs, camera modules, and films, these projects will cut imports by ₹20,000 crores annually, create 5,000 jobs, and boost India’s electronics export and self-reliance goals.
