IT services major Cognizant has formed a dedicated OpenAI group bringing together more than 25,000 professionals to help businesses adopt artificial intelligence. The new OpenAI Frontier Capability Group will work with products such as ChatGPT and Codex, helping clients integrate AI into software development, customer service and everyday business operations.

Cognizant says it is first expanding the use of OpenAI technology within its own sales and customer success teams. The company plans to use lessons from those deployments to support clients as they bring AI into their organisations.

Three Initial Areas of Focus

The group will initially concentrate on AI-assisted software engineering, application modernisation and agentic customer operations.

For software engineering, Cognizant plans to use Codex to support developers as they write, test and release code. In application modernisation, its OpenAI-powered tools will help with work ranging from understanding legacy mainframe systems to generating cloud-native code. Cognizant says engineers will review every consequential decision.

The third area involves applying AI to sales, service and support operations. The company aims to build systems that can work within business processes, rather than offering AI tools in isolation.

Training and Internal Use

Cognizant said more than 21,000 employees have earned over 40,000 OpenAI learning badges. The company is also developing specialist roles for engineers and business operators trained to work with advanced AI systems.

Its sales and customer success teams already use an OpenAI-powered solution to identify and pursue business opportunities. Cognizant expects that internal experience to inform the services it offers clients.

Early Client Example

The company cited an OpenAI-powered assistant developed with a global biopharmaceutical company. The system combines search, content creation, translation and approvals. According to Cognizant, it has handled more than five million conversations and reduced content-creation time by 60 per cent.

The company did not disclose a revenue target, investment amount or the number of clients expected to use the new group’s services.

A Push to Bring AI Into Business Operations

The new group gives Cognizant’s OpenAI partnership a dedicated delivery structure. Its work will focus on helping companies move from experimenting with AI tools to integrating them into existing systems and workflows.

The scale of the group signals Cognizant’s push to expand AI-related services, while the commercial impact will depend on how quickly clients adopt the solutions and what measurable results those deployments deliver.
