Pune took a major step forward in improving its public transport infrastructure as the first trial run of Metro Line 3 connecting Shivajinagar to Hinjawadi was successfully conducted. Officials confirmed that 87 percent of the work is complete, especially in the Maan area.

Key to Solving Traffic Woes in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad
Metro Line 3 is expected to be a game-changer for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, where daily traffic congestion has worsened due to the increasing number of private vehicles and inadequate road infrastructure. Hinjawadi, known as Pune’s biggest IT hub, sees thousands of commuters every day. This metro line is being seen as a critical solution to ease the load on city roads.
Public-Private Partnership for Execution
The project is being executed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) in partnership with Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCRL) under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Construction began on 25th November 2021 and is on track to be completed by March 2026.
23.3 Km Route With 23 Modern Stations
Once completed, Metro Line 3 will span 23.3 kilometers and include 23 elevated stations. The route will offer multiple interchanges with existing metro lines, enhancing connectivity throughout the region. This is part of a larger urban mobility plan that aims to create a multi-modal transport network across Pune.
Modern Coaches and Fast Connectivity
Each metro train will have three fully air-conditioned coaches, with a capacity of approximately 1,000 passengers. These trains are designed to operate at speeds of up to 80 km per hour, drastically cutting down travel time for office-goers and daily commuters.
Trial Run Signals Rapid Progress
The trial run was conducted from Maan Depot to PMR 4 Station. A PMRDA spokesperson said, “Pune Metro Line 3 is progressing at a record pace. It will significantly ease traffic congestion and offer residents a fast, comfortable, and eco-friendly mode of travel.”
