As we all are well aware, Twitter was acquired by the world’s richest man, Elon Musk last week. He began his reign over the social media platform by firing some of the top executives at the company.
And now, the news is that he will lay off a quarter of Twitter’s employees in a “first” round of layoffs.
Elon Musk To Fire A Quarter of Twitter Employees Soon
As confirmed by sources close to the development, the discussions about the job cuts were led by celebrity attorney Alex Spiro, who has been a legal representative of Musk for a long time now.
According to a regulatory filing, Twitter had over 7,000 employees at the end of 2021, with nearly 2,000 people making up a quarter of the total.
There also was the news that he had fired Twitter workers before November 1 in order to avoid having to pay out stock grants on that day.
Musk fired Twitter Chief Executive Parag Agrawal, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, and Chief Legal Affairs and Policy Officer Vijaya Gadde on Thursday after the $44 billion buyout that stretched for six months was completed.
In response, Agrawal filed a lawsuit to enforce the terms of a takeover agreement that the Tesla CEO had attempted to elude.
It’s interesting that these reports surfaced hours before Musk was supposed to finalize his on-again, off-again agreement to buy the social media network.
Some Employees Already Quit Fearing Harassment?
According to a worker who asked to remain anonymous, some of the employees who would prefer not to work for Musk have already quit. “But some people, including me, are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for now,” the author continued.
Basically, activists are worried about Musk running Twitter.
They worry about an increase in harassment and false information, and it makes sense given that Musk is known for harassing other Twitter users.
When asked about this, Musk said he understood that Twitter “cannot become a free-for-all hellscape where anything can be said with no consequences.”
As per reports, he has vowed to reduce content moderation to the absolute minimum in line with the comment.
