HCL Staff In Metros Can Permanently Shift To Home Town! But How Will This Happen?

HCL to double its employee count in small metro cities like Lucknow and Nagpur (among others) in the next 2-3 years.

Amidst everything that is going on all around the globe, it is pretty safe to say that the Covid-19 pandemic has given us the flavor of work from home and tech companies all around the globe are making the best out of it.

We have covered innumerable articles/stories on how different tech/non-tech companies are doing to make full use of the WFM situation, right from providing employee perks to company profits.

This period of remote working has also led to some permanent shifts in the work models of many companies, like TCS, or more recently as we know it, by the 3rd largest tech company of India, HCL Technologies.

HCL Tech to Increase the Employee Count in Smaller Cities

In a recent interview with the chief executive of HCL C Vijayakumar, as reported by ET, HCL Technologies is planning to increase its employee count in smaller cities like Lucknow, Nagpur, Madurai and Vijayawada, in the next 2-3 years.

The company aims to achieve this capacity expansion by relocating several existing employees to these branches, along with fresh hirings.

Vijayakumar added, “In the light of COVID-19, we have been able to leverage some of these locations very well to tide over local pandemic flare ups. So having more people in smaller locations have been very helpful.”

‘New Vistas’

HCL came up with the idea of opening new office centres in such mini-metros towns in 2016.

Starting from building office centres in Lucknow and Nagpur, HCL added Madurai to this list, with Vijayawada being its latest addition just last year.

These new locations are termed as ‘New Vistas’ by the company and the employee count is estimated to double over the next 2-3 years.

According to Vijayakumar,

“Having centers in smaller towns has definitely helped us. And the core element of the strategy was to create a more resilient global delivery network for us.

So from a business continuity perspective and location derisking perspective, it has been of great help.”
