Airtel Launches Open Network; Makes Tower Location & Network Strength Public!

Airtel today announced launch of Open Network Initiative under their flagship “Project Leap” program wherein the company has vowed to make it’s entire mobile network information accessible to all it’s customers. Airtel has launched a separate section on it’s mobile app MyAirtel and a dynamic website for enabling users to check the coverage strength and data strength. Both are functional starting today.

One can check their coverage signal strength and report network issues to the company. Providing real time details of the network range fluctuations, the operating towers, data consumption info etc. India’s largest telecommunications provider steps up to enhance the customer satisfaction . Also Airtel relationship centres will provide more info on this unique initiative.

Under the Project Leap, Airtel has put up state-of-the-art technology to smoothen fiber issues, strengthen existing equipment and make way for new technology that will aid in providing greater coverage to beat it’s old benchmark.

“Open Network is a paradigm shift in the way we engage with our customers. With this initiative, we are establishing complete transparency with regards to our mobile network and opening ourselves to customer scrutiny and feedback. For us, the network experience is paramount and Airtel customers can now take charge of network issues and be a part of the solution, rather than waiting for it to happen.”, said Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO of Bharti Airtel.

Under Project Leap, Airtel is not only upgrading it’s existing equipment but also investing over Rs. 15,000 crores in bringing premier equipment in as many as 88,000 sites, which happens to be the largest network deployment outside of China. Airtel is also planning on broadening it’s connectivity by installing more towers, deployment of fiber technology and increasing it’s network capacity by acquiring additional spectrum.

One could say a whole internal management reconstruction is underway. Airtel also proudly announces that “ a 25% more stringent voluntary benchmark of 1.5% for mobile call drops versus the current TRAI prescribed norm of 2% under the Quality of Service regulations.”

Captioned “Because you have a lot to say. And we have nothing to hide” , the Open Network web interface is clear cut and talks to you even without you making an effort. All the contents on the website are addressed to the user and for once you feel like the clan of corporate bosses and the company is having a one-to-one with it’s user.

The ad too on the newspaper is squeaky clean about what it has to convey. No beating around the bush or misleading sophisticated words. It reads

“OPEN QUESTIONS.
Sometimes a big step starts with an open question. We asked ourselves two. Are we the best network we could possibly be? Honestly and humbly, No.
Do we want to get there? Fervently and definitely, Yes.
So for starters, we’ve decided to become India’s first Open Network. Which means you have open access to our tower maps, our internet strength, our strong signal zones and our weak spots. Not just in your state or city but right down to where you live.
So please judge us, question us, tell us where we’re going wrong and partner us in getting it right. Because the truth is, you know what you need far better than we know what you need. And if we want you to open up to us, we have to start by opening up to you. So we’re starting with two simple words.
QUESTIONS OPEN”
