All eyes are now set in the anticipation of Apple’s WWDC 2023 event, with just one month left, speculations are rife and everyone is waiting for the iOS 17. Many speculations of Apple redesigning the user interface for its wearable devices and bringing new functionalities is doing the rounds.
One speculation by a tipster has caught everyone’s attention, wherein the Twitter handle @analyst941 is now suggesting that the company might also introduce the ability to pair the Apple Watch to multiple devices including iPads and Macs.
Ability to Connect Apple Watch to Various Devices
Ever since its inception in 2014, Apple has been restricting users from being able to connect their smartwatches to multiple devices like iPhones.
Since Apple Watch could be not be connected to any other smartphone, it meant that the users of Apple watch either had to get an iPhone or borrow one if they wanted to set up their smartwatch.
Once an Apple Watch is linked to an iPhone as a primary device, users can sync their fitness data to the cloud linked to their Apple accounts and use the Watch to unlock their Mac.
While the tweet suggests Apple will bring the ability to pair and sync the Apple Watch with various devices, it gives no details on how and when it will be rolled out to the general public.
Why Does Apple Doesn’t Allow to Connect to Different Phones?
The cited reasons are privacy, the uncited can be exclusivity and a on a birds’ eye view it is nothing but the classic business strategy of cross-selling and upselling. Not allowing the watch to be paired with Android will increase the iPhone sales as well.
If Apple allowed pairing with Android or say made it compatible to Android smartphones, then people won’t be bound to purchase an iPhone and would hurt them.
It is not the first company to do so, remember BBM? The famous Blackberry messenger was only available on Blackberry phone. Though eventually it was available other phones also.
Same goes for iMessage. This Apple feature is not available on other devices as it will make iPhones normal without any unique or premium feature.
Its basically a strategy to nurture their own ecosystem running on iOS and MacOS with devices like iPhones, iPads, Apple TV, iMac, MacBooks etc and want people to buy them. They make features iOS specific or strictly iPhone based as to enhance their device sale and keep the premium tag.
