In a significant move aimed at strengthening user privacy, WhatsApp is testing a username-based system in its latest iOS beta release. According to WABetaInfo, this upcoming feature will let users choose unique usernames, allowing conversations without revealing phone numbers—making it ideal for interacting with unknown contacts or in group settings.

Whatsapp Users Would Be Able To Hide Phone Number With User Name

How the Username Feature Will Work
Users will be able to select a unique handle, replacing their phone number in chats. Each username must meet specific criteria:

  • Must include at least one letter
  • Can use lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), periods (.), and underscores (_)
  • Length should be between 3 and 30 characters
  • Cannot contain domains (like .com), start or end with a period, or have double periods

Duplicate usernames will not be allowed, and handles already saved in a user’s contact list will also be blocked from use. Once a valid username is chosen, WhatsApp will display a celebratory confirmation screen, officially linking the new handle to the user’s account.

Coming Soon to WhatsApp Web
A similar username feature is under development for WhatsApp Web. This version will allow users to check the availability of their desired username and reserve it in advance of the official rollout. This ensures users can claim their preferred handle early, further improving the user experience across devices.

Boosting Privacy and Transparency
The username system aims to offer more anonymity without compromising communication. Once a username is active, it will be visible in chats instead of a phone number. Additionally, when a user updates their username, a system-generated message will notify all ongoing conversations in real time, promoting transparency.

Final Thoughts
WhatsApp’s username feature marks a major shift in how the platform handles user identity and privacy. By hiding phone numbers and enforcing strict username rules, WhatsApp is aiming for a safer and more user-friendly experience. The feature is expected to roll out to all users in the coming weeks.
