WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new cloud backup system for iPhone users that could eliminate the need to rely entirely on Apple’s iCloud. The upcoming feature would allow users to store chat backups on WhatsApp’s own cloud servers while maintaining end-to-end encryption. If introduced, the update could provide a convenient alternative for users who frequently run out of free iCloud storage.

A New Backup Option For iPhone Users

Currently, WhatsApp users on iPhones can back up their chats only through iCloud. The new feature, which has been spotted in a beta version of the app, is expected to let users choose between iCloud and WhatsApp’s own cloud storage directly from the backup settings.

Although iCloud will likely remain an available option, users may be able to switch between the two backup methods based on their storage needs.

Free Storage Expected

Reports suggest that WhatsApp plans to offer 2GB of free cloud storage for chat backups. This would allow users to preserve their iCloud storage for photos, videos, documents, and complete device backups.

The company is also believed to be working on paid storage plans for users who require additional backup space, though details have not yet been announced.

Enhanced Security For Chat Backups

Security remains a key focus of the upcoming feature. Chat backups stored on WhatsApp’s cloud are expected to be protected with end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the account owner can access the stored conversations.

Users may also have the option to secure their backups using passkeys, passwords, or encryption keys for an additional layer of protection.

Android Users Could Benefit Too

WhatsApp is reportedly developing a similar backup solution for Android devices. Instead of relying solely on Google Drive, Android users may eventually have the option to store encrypted chat backups directly on WhatsApp’s cloud servers.

This would create a more consistent backup experience across both Android and iPhone platforms.

Launch Timeline Still Unknown

The feature is still under development and has not been officially announced. It has yet to reach public beta testing, and there is no confirmed release date. However, its appearance in recent beta builds suggests that WhatsApp is actively working to expand backup options and provide users with greater flexibility in managing their chat history.

Summary

WhatsApp is developing a new cloud backup service that will allow iPhone users to save chats without depending solely on iCloud. The feature is expected to include 2GB of free storage, end-to-end encrypted backups, and optional paid storage plans. If launched, it will offer users a more flexible and secure way to protect their WhatsApp conversations.
