Trump Creates New AI Task Force

US President Donald Trump has announced the creation of a new government task force called the “Super Intelligence Force”, which will focus on artificial intelligence policy and help ensure that the US remains a global leader in the technology.

The task force will be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton and will report directly to Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

Who Will Be Part Of The Super Intelligence Force?

The new group will bring together senior officials from several parts of the US government.

Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson and Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael will be part of the task force. Scott Kupor, Director of the Office of Personnel Management, has also been appointed as a member.

The group will coordinate the federal government’s engagement with consumers, public interest organisations, religious groups, critical infrastructure providers and companies developing advanced AI systems.

Trump Wants US To Lead AI Development

Trump’s announcement comes as governments and technology companies grapple with how to manage the rapid development of increasingly powerful AI systems.

The US president has repeatedly emphasised the importance of maintaining American leadership in artificial intelligence. However, his administration has generally favoured allowing technology companies greater freedom rather than imposing extensive government regulation.

The new task force could therefore become an important mechanism for coordinating Washington’s approach to AI without necessarily introducing a traditional regulatory framework.

Tech Companies Face Pressure Over AI Safety

The announcement follows growing pressure from prominent technology executives for stronger safeguards around AI.

Executives from companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, SpaceX and Google recently signed a voluntary agreement related to AI safety and responsible development.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also argued that society needs to accept some risks associated with AI because of the potential benefits and the importance of allowing people to access the technology.

Trump had previously said he would establish a board focused on AI safety.

Why Is Trump Calling It ‘Super Intelligence’?

The announcement comes shortly after Trump ordered the use of “super intelligence” as a new term for AI.

Trump has previously criticised the word “artificial”, saying it makes the technology sound fake. However, experts have questioned whether the new terminology could create confusion because superintelligence traditionally refers to AI systems that significantly exceed human intelligence.

The rebranding has already attracted support from some technology leaders.

Elon Musk Also Adopts The New Terminology

Elon Musk said his company would rename its AI platform from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, with the “SI” standing for super intelligence.

Musk has recently returned to work with the US government on a project examining the future of warfare after previously serving in the Trump administration.

The creation of the Super Intelligence Force signals that AI is increasingly being treated not merely as a technology issue, but as a matter of national strategy, security and economic competitiveness.

Summary

US President Donald Trump has created a new “Super Intelligence Force” to coordinate the government’s approach to artificial intelligence and help maintain US leadership in the technology. Led by intelligence chief Jay Clayton, the task force will include senior officials from defence, trade and government. The move comes amid growing debate over AI safety, regulation and the risks associated with increasingly powerful systems.
