In our exploration of forthcoming electric scooters, we delve into the potential releases from prominent brands such as Honda, Yamaha, Bajaj, Ather, Kinetic, and others. Electric scooters are progressively emerging as the preferred mode of urban transportation due to their cost-effectiveness and practicality compared to traditional ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) scooters. In this article, we present information about six electric scooters slated for launch in India before the year 2025.
Honda Activa Electric
Honda has laid out a comprehensive plan for the next five years in India, committing to introduce ten new electric two-wheelers. Honda recently patented a swingarm-mounted motor for its electric vehicles, which is expected to debut in these upcoming models. The first electric scooter in this lineup is likely to be the Activa Electric, given its impressive sales record over the years.
The Activa Electric is anticipated to be available in two variants: one with a fixed battery and another with a swappable battery. Reports suggest that Honda has partnered with Hindustan Petroleum to establish battery-swapping stations at petrol pumps across the country.
Suzuki Burgman Electric
The Suzuki e-Burgman has already made its debut in Japan and is currently undergoing testing on Indian roads, hinting at an earlier-than-expected launch. It is currently equipped with a 4kW motor, delivering a peak torque of 18Nm and offering a range of 45km with a top speed of 60 kmph. The battery is expected to be swappable, which should reduce charging times. Notably, this same battery is being used by Honda, owing to a collaborative battery-sharing platform involving Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki.
Yamaha E-01
Initially, Yamaha had plans to introduce the electric Neo’s scooter, which is already in operation on European roads. The Neo’s scooter features the same swappable battery shared with Honda, providing a range of 45km on a single charge. However, Yamaha India changed its strategy after assessing the Indian market’s response to EVs like Ather, iQube, and Ola, which have influenced consumers to prioritize premium products with good range and competitive pricing.
Yamaha India is now developing a sporty electric scooter to compete in this evolving landscape, promising a premium and stylish product with the sporty DNA characteristic of Yamaha.
Kinetic e-Luna
The iconic Luna is set to make a comeback, this time in an electric avatar. The design of the electric moped suggests practicality and features LED lighting all around, along with an LCD instrument cluster. The battery is positioned beneath the spacious floorboard, providing versatility for carrying items.
The e-Luna boasts a split-seat configuration, allowing for the installation of accessories like a top box, making it a versatile multi-utility electric vehicle. While details on the battery and motor are still forthcoming, it is expected to offer a range of approximately 60-70 kilometers with a top speed of 50kmph. The anticipated price range for the Kinetic e-Luna is between Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 80,000, ex-showroom.
Bajaj Chetak
The Bajaj Chetak is set to receive an upgrade, with the new model expected to offer an extended range of up to 110 kilometers. The current model is equipped with a 2.9kWh battery, providing a certified range of 95 kilometers. The upgraded model may feature a larger 4kWh battery, contributing to the increased range.
Apart from the battery upgrade, most of the vehicle’s attributes are expected to remain consistent. This includes its premium feel with a robust steel unibody, Bluetooth connectivity, geo-fencing, over-the-air updates (OTA), color LCD console, reverse mode for low-speed parking, and more.
Ather New Variants
Ather Energy CEO Tarun Mehta has confirmed the impending introduction of two additional models to Ather’s portfolio, with the official announcement expected in the coming year. Mehta mentioned that their current Ather 450 lineup largely covers the sports scooter segment. Therefore, the focus for the new scooter models will lean towards comfort and practicality.
These forthcoming scooters are expected to have larger dimensions to accommodate more comfortable seating for both the rider and pillion. Additionally, they may offer expanded under-seat storage, thanks to the larger seat. Features like the 7-inch touchscreen instrument cluster will likely be retained, and more affordable variants may include the 7-inch LCD introduced on the 450S model.
