Amit Gupta, a senior Tech Mahindra employee, has been detained in Qatar since January under unknown charges, leaving his family in distress. His father, JP Gupta, recently spoke about the ordeal, revealing that the family is struggling to get clarity on his case despite repeated efforts to seek intervention from Indian authorities and Tech Mahindra.
Amit’s Career and Sudden Detention
Amit has worked in Qatar for nearly 15 years, initially posted there by Tech Mahindra in 2013. Over the years, he rose to the position of regional head for Qatar and Kuwait, leading a successful career. However, on January 1, he was unexpectedly taken into custody while dining at an eatery, with no official explanation given to the family. Since then, his custody has been repeatedly extended without providing any legal clarity.
Unclear Charges and Prolonged Custody
The Qatari state security department reportedly informed Amit that his company was involved in contract manipulation. However, no formal charges have been disclosed, leaving his family in complete darkness. His father expressed deep concern over his son’s prolonged detention, stating that Amit has been in solitary confinement, allowed only five-minute phone calls on Wednesdays and limited exposure to sunlight for barely 10 minutes a day.
Family’s Plea for Help
Despite the family’s continuous efforts, including visits to Qatar in February, they have been unable to secure any relief. They have sought assistance from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), and Tech Mahindra. However, there has been no substantial update on Amit’s case. While Tech Mahindra has deployed two lawyers and assured support, the situation remains unchanged.
Hopes for Resolution
The Gupta family remains hopeful that diplomatic intervention will lead to Amit’s release. They urge higher authorities to step in, as the lack of transparency and prolonged custody without charges raise serious concerns about his rights and well-being. Until then, Amit remains confined in an uncertain fate, with his family desperate for answers.
