On the factory floor of Ranipet, steel and ambition met to script a new chapter in India’s industrial story.

India Joins JLR’s Global Map

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday inaugurated Tata Motors’ new passenger vehicle and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) manufacturing facility in Ranipet. Tata Group Chairperson Natarajan Chandrasekaran announced that JLR will produce 2.5 to 3 lakh vehicles annually at the plant, formally placing India on the luxury brand’s global manufacturing map.

“The facility marks a significant expansion for the Jaguar Land Rover brand, which currently conducts testing and manufacturing in the UK, Austria, China, and Brazil. With the opening of the Ranipet plant, India is officially added to the global industrial map for the luxury vehicle brand,” he said.

The unit will manufacture both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs). The first model rolled out was the Land Rover Evoque, unveiled by Stalin. Chandrasekaran noted that the Chief Minister had laid the foundation stone just 16 months ago and reiterated his support for the project, which is structured in three phases to be completed within four years.

He added that the “Tata Motors, JLR industry will be at an advanced level” as production scales up. The chairman also highlighted Tata Group’s broader expansion in Tamil Nadu, spanning Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Indian Hotels Taj, and Tata Electronics.

Jobs, Expansion and the Multiplier Effect

State Industries Minister TRB Rajaa said the new JLR facility is expected to generate 5,000 direct jobs, significantly strengthening the luxury automaker’s footprint in India.

“…What is more important for me and my Chief Minister is the ancillary units that are going to come around JLR itself. It’s going to be phenomenal,” Rajaa told ANI.

He described the current operations as only the beginning. “This is just phase one you’re seeing. Imagine phase two and three also coming in and the entire lot of vehicles being rolled out,” he said, hinting at further investments and upcoming announcements at the ‘Convergence Conclave’.

Rajaa credited swift clearances and execution for the project’s rapid rollout. “We’re extremely, extremely thankful to the Tata Group also for having pulled this off in record time. One is clearance, but then execution here also matters,” he said.

The workforce has been recruited across Tamil Nadu, supported by the state’s Skill Development Corporation to prepare local youth for advanced manufacturing roles.

As engines begin to hum in Ranipet, India’s place on the luxury auto map sounds louder than ever.
