Meta-owned WhatsApp is preparing to roll out several new features aimed at enhancing user privacy. According to a recent report from WABetaInfo, a trusted WhatsApp features tracker, one of the standout updates is the introduction of a “Username and PIN” option. This feature is designed to give users more control over their privacy by allowing them to use usernames instead of phone numbers.

Replace Whatsapp Number With Username & Pin: New Feature Being Tested

Substitute Phone Numbers with Usernames

The “Username and PIN” feature will allow users to substitute their phone numbers with usernames, providing an added layer of privacy. Users can choose from three privacy settings: “Username,” “Phone number,” and “Username with PIN.” By selecting the “Username” option, users can keep their phone numbers hidden, displaying only a username to others. However, existing contacts who already have the user’s phone number will still be able to see it. New contacts will only view the username in the profile section.

Enhanced Privacy with PIN Protection

The third option, “Username with PIN,” introduces a four-digit PIN that users can share with specific people. This PIN will allow only those individuals to connect with the user on WhatsApp. While this feature is designed to give users more control over their privacy, there is a potential drawback. Contacts who already have the user’s phone number can still message them, even if the PIN feature is activated. Nevertheless, this tool aims to empower users by allowing them to control who can initially contact them on the platform.

Status Like Reaction Feature in Testing

In addition to the privacy enhancements, WhatsApp is also testing a new feature that will allow users to like status updates, similar to Instagram’s story likes. This feature, currently undergoing testing with public beta users, will let users show appreciation for status updates with a quick “like” reaction. Users can tap a heart emoji icon at the bottom left corner of the screen while viewing a status update to send a like notification to the person who posted the status. Additionally, users can see who liked their statuses by checking the standard views list.

Availability and Future Updates

Currently, the “Username and PIN” feature is available to WhatsApp Android beta version 2.24.18.2 users for testing. However, stable Android users will need to wait until the feature is rolled out in a future update. The status like reaction feature is also expected to be included in upcoming updates, further enhancing the user experience on WhatsApp.
