The amount of luggage that passengers are permitted to bring on trains is subject to stringent regulations enforced by Indian Railways.
Many tourists are not aware that they may be fined for carrying more luggage than is allowed.

Indian Railways Luggage Rules: Exceed the Limit and You Could Be Fined
Each travel class has a different luggage weight limit, and going over it without reserving the extra in advance could result in fines.
Although not all passengers’ luggage is regularly weighed, it can be checked at large train stations with scanners or close to parcel offices.
If baggage looks too big or heavy, train ticket examiners (TTEs) and luggage inspectors may stop and check it.
During security checks, security personnel may also weigh luggage, particularly if the items are obviously large, like TVs, big suitcases, or boxes.
Indian Railways: Free Luggage Weight Limits for Each Travel Class
The free luggage weight limits per class are as follows:
- General Class: up to 35 kg
- Sleeper Class: up to 40 kg
- Third AC: up to 40 kg
- Second AC: up to 50 kg
- First AC: up to 70 kg
Passengers who bring more luggage than these allotments are required to reserve it in advance at the parcel office.
If this isn’t done, the TTE or luggage inspector may impose fines based on the additional weight and travel distance.
In order to prevent inconvenience and fines, travelers are encouraged to reserve extra baggage in advance and make sure they don’t exceed the allowed limits.
