Indian Railways has introduced a key update for emergency travel bookings: Aadhaar linking is now mandatory for Tatkal ticket reservations. This step aims to curb fraudulent practices, streamline bookings, and ensure that genuine passengers have better access during urgent travel needs.

Minister Confirms New System
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the development on social media, stating that the Aadhaar-based system will benefit real users during emergencies. Passengers with unverified Aadhaar can book up to 6 Tatkal tickets per month, while those with verified Aadhaar can book up to 12 tickets, increasing convenience for frequent travelers.
Tackling Touts and Ticket Mafia
Tatkal bookings have long been exploited by touts using fake IDs and auto-booking tools to hoard tickets. With Aadhaar authentication, each booking will now be tied to a unique, government-verified identity. This move brings accountability and transparency, helping prevent the misuse of bulk bookings and fake user credentials.
Improved Digital Tracking and Fraud Detection
Indian Railways is also upgrading its backend systems to identify suspicious patterns, such as rapid repeat bookings. These automated fraud detection measures will help prevent scams and create a more secure, streamlined environment for genuine passengers.
This digital transformation aligns with broader efforts to modernise railway services, cut down on paperwork, and promote a seamless digital booking experience for all.
Better Access During High-Demand Periods
With festivals, holidays, and sudden emergencies creating booking surges, the new Aadhaar-linked system ensures fairer access. It restricts agents and bots from hoarding tickets and prioritises availability for real travellers.
The Tatkal ticketing system was originally designed for last-minute, urgent travel — but over the years, it became a battleground for ticketing agents and touts. Aadhaar linkage restores its original purpose, giving everyday passengers a better shot at confirmed seats.
