Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), operated by the GMR Group, has unveiled plans to introduce an ‘Air Train’ — an Automated People Mover (APM) system — that will connect Terminal 1 (T1) with Terminal 2 (T2) and Terminal 3 (T3). This initiative is aimed at enhancing passenger mobility and reducing travel time between terminals at India’s busiest airport.
According to DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, the Air Train will provide a smooth, time-efficient, and eco-friendly alternative for passengers transferring between terminals, especially those catching connecting flights.
Golden Line Metro To Boost Connectivity
In addition to the Air Train, Delhi Metro’s upcoming Golden Line (Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor) under Phase IV will provide a direct metro connection between T1 and Aerocity, thereby linking it to T3 through the existing Airport Express Line.
“The Golden Line was earlier planned up to Aerocity. We have now convinced DMRC to extend it to T1,” Jaipuriar said, emphasizing the importance of an integrated station at Aerocity for multi-modal connectivity.
A True Multi-Modal Transport Hub
The Aerocity area will soon serve as a major transport hub, integrating the RRTS (Regional Rapid Transit System), the Airport Metro Line, and the Air Train. This unified infrastructure will allow passengers to easily switch between transport modes — from metro to airport terminals — without the hassle of multiple transfers or road traffic.
The Air Train project will be developed on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model, making it a key infrastructure milestone for Delhi Airport’s long-term vision of handling over 100 million passengers annually.
