Mumbai is gearing up for a major public transport transformation as four new Metro lines are set to partially open by late 2025, significantly reducing travel time for lakhs of daily commuters. Complementing this expansion is the launch of the Mumbai One app—a unified digital platform that integrates various modes of transport, offering a seamless commuting experience.

Mumbai Metro Expanding By 167 Kms, New Metro Lines Coming Up

Metro Network Expansion to Boost East-West Connectivity in Mumbai

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is overseeing the development of a 12-line Metro network, covering 337.1 km across the city. Currently, four Metro lines (58.9 km) are operational, and eight more (165.7 km) are under active construction. Metro Line 9, the Red Line, will connect Dahisar to Mira Bhayander, with the Dahisar to Kashigaon stretch expected to open by December 2025. Over 98% of the work is complete, and the line will enhance east-west connectivity through links with Lines 2A and 10.

Metro Line 2B, the Yellow Line, will run from DN Nagar to Mandale via BKC and Kurla. The Mandale to Diamond Garden segment, with 78% work completed, is scheduled for launch by late 2025. It will bridge the gap between western suburbs and eastern hubs like Chembur.

Mumbai Gears Up for Seamless Transit with Metro Expansion and Unified Mobility App

Metro Line 3, the Aqua Line, an underground corridor from Colaba to SEEPZ, is nearing full completion. The Cuffe Parade to Aarey segment is expected to be operational by August 2025. Metro Lines 4 and 4A, the Green Line, will connect Wadala to Gaimukh via Kasarvadavli. The Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction section should open in early 2026, with 84% of work completed.

The Mumbai One app will integrate 11 public transport services—including suburban rail, Metro, Monorail, and buses from multiple operators—offering QR-based ticketing, journey planning, live updates, SOS features, and unified digital payments. To support this growth, MMRDA has established the Mandale Metro Depot, India’s largest Metro staff training center, aligned with the PMKVY skill development mission. With major infrastructure and digital platforms nearing readiness, Mumbai is poised to revolutionize its urban transit by 2025.

Summary:

Mumbai is set for a major public transport upgrade by late 2025 with four new Metro lines boosting connectivity and reducing travel time. The Mumbai One app will unify 11 transport services with features like QR ticketing and live updates. A new Metro training center supports this urban mobility transformation.
