Microsoft is offering voluntary exit packages to approximately 60,000 employees across the United States, India, the United Kingdom and Canada as the technology giant adjusts its workforce amid rising investments in artificial intelligence (AI). Announced on October 26, 2026, the programme gives eligible employees an opportunity to leave the company with financial support and career transition resources.
The initiative could affect more than a quarter of Microsoft’s global workforce, which stood at approximately 223,000 employees as of June 2026. However, the company has not announced how many workers are expected to accept the offer.

Microsoft Introduces Voluntary Exit Programme
Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the new Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) in an internal communication published on the company’s official blog.
The programme is available to eligible employees at internal level 70 and below in participating teams across India, the US, the UK and Canada. Eligibility depends on the employee’s organisation and business unit, meaning the offer will not be available across the entire company.
Microsoft said the initiative would provide employees considering opportunities outside the company with financial assistance and career planning resources. The company also intends to give participating business units greater flexibility to adapt their workforces to changing requirements.
AI, Copilot, Xbox and Windows Teams Among Those Affected
According to reports citing people familiar with the programme, participating divisions include AI experiences, Copilot, finance, human resources, Xbox and Windows + Devices.
Some marketing, commercial business and security teams are excluded from the programme, although eligibility varies across organisations.
The announcement comes as Microsoft continues expanding its AI products and infrastructure. The company has integrated Copilot across its software ecosystem while committing substantial resources to cloud computing and data centres needed to support AI workloads.
Microsoft Employees in India Also Eligible
India is among the four countries covered by the voluntary exit programme. Microsoft has approximately 23,000 employees in India, although the company has not disclosed how many of them are eligible for the offer.
Eligible employees are expected to receive individual communications detailing their exit terms and benefits. Reports indicate that the decision deadline falls in early December, with employees accepting the offer expected to leave by the end of 2026.
The package is understood to be based on Microsoft’s severance policies, with benefits varying according to factors such as location, seniority and length of service. Employees should refer to their individual offers for the applicable terms.
Buyouts Follow Earlier Microsoft Job Cuts
The new programme follows previous workforce reductions and a voluntary retirement initiative introduced earlier in 2026.
Microsoft announced the elimination of approximately 4,800 roles in July, with cuts particularly affecting parts of its commercial and Xbox gaming operations. The company has also been reorganising teams and shifting resources towards areas considered strategically important.
Unlike conventional layoffs, a voluntary exit programme allows eligible employees to choose whether to accept a financial package and leave the company.
However, Microsoft has not said how many employees it expects to depart under the latest initiative.
Rising AI Investments Put Pressure on Technology Companies
Microsoft’s move comes amid an industry-wide expansion of AI infrastructure spending. Technology companies are investing heavily in computing capacity, data centres and advanced AI systems while reviewing operating costs and workforce requirements.
The voluntary exit programme could help Microsoft adjust staffing levels across selected business units while continuing to invest in AI development.
Nevertheless, the company has not said that AI automation is directly responsible for every position covered by the programme. The initiative reflects broader workforce planning and changing business priorities.
For employees, the offer presents a decision involving financial benefits, future employment prospects and the timing of a potential career transition. For Microsoft, its eventual participation rate will help determine the programme’s impact on staffing and operating expenses.
