Meta’s new social media app, Threads, has achieved an impressive feat by surpassing 100 million users in just five days since its launch. This accomplishment has dethroned ChatGPT as the fastest-growing consumer product ever. Threads, which aims to become a platform with 1 billion users, was introduced on July 6, 2023.
Meta’s Threads Surpasses 100 Million Users in Record Time, Mark Zuckerberg Emphasizes Organic Growth
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced the milestone of reaching 100 million users in a post on Threads. He highlighted that the demand for the app has been primarily organic, with many promotional efforts yet to be activated.
Previously, ChatGPT, a generative AI-based chatbot developed by OpenAI, achieved 10 million daily users within 40 days of its launch and reached 100 million daily active users in approximately two months. At the time, ChatGPT held the record for the fastest product to reach 100 million daily active users, surpassing popular social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok by a significant margin.
In comparison, Twitter reported a total of 240 million daily active users as of July 2022, according to company filings. However, web analytics firm Similarweb has observed an 11% decrease in Twitter’s web traffic compared to the same period last year following the launch of Threads.
Instagram CEO Reveals Threads’ Intentional Avoidance of News and Politics, Twitter Accuses Meta of Trade Secret Misuse
In a recent interview with The Verge, Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, disclosed that Threads was intentionally designed to avoid news and politics. Mosseri explained that including such content invites excessive scrutiny and negativity, potentially compromising the integrity of the app.
Twitter has accused Meta of using its trade secrets during the development of Threads. The Elon Musk-led platform has demanded that Meta cease using confidential data and has even threatened the possibility of a lawsuit.
Numerous alternatives to Twitter have emerged following Elon Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of the social media giant in October of the previous year. However, none of these alternatives have achieved the level of success witnessed by Threads.
