For years, WagonR has been one of India’s best-selling cars, known for its fuel efficiency, spacious interiors, and reliability. Suzuki is now taking it a step further with a full-hybrid version expected to debut in Japan later this year. If launched as planned, it will be the first minicar in the world with a full-hybrid powertrain.

New-Gen WagonR Hybrid: Powertrain and Features
The new WagonR will come with Suzuki’s strong hybrid setup, combining:
- A 660cc, 3-cylinder DOHC petrol engine producing 54 PS and 58 Nm torque
- An electric motor contributing 10 PS and 29 Nm
- An electric CVT transmission for seamless power delivery
In addition to the hybrid powertrain, the car will feature:
- Sliding rear doors for easier access and better cargo handling
- Highly customizable seats for flexible interior configurations
- Compact dimensions: 3,395 mm length, 1,475 mm width, 1,650 mm height, and 2,460 mm wheelbase
The new WagonR hybrid in Japan is expected to start at 1.3 million yen (Rs 7.65 lakh), with the top variant reaching 1.9 million yen (Rs 11.19 lakh).
Will India Get the WagonR Hybrid?
Maruti is working on an affordable hybrid system for smaller cars like WagonR, Swift, and Dzire. While Toyota’s hybrid tech is an option, it may be too expensive for budget-friendly models. Instead, Maruti is developing its own cost-effective hybrid solution.
However, hybrid adoption in India faces challenges due to:
- High tax rates – Hybrid cars attract 28% GST plus additional cess, raising the total tax to 43%
- Limited government incentives – EVs get 5% GST, road tax waivers, and FAME-II subsidies, while hybrids do not
- State-wise variations – Some states, like Uttar Pradesh, offer tax benefits for hybrids, but a nationwide incentive is needed
Final Thoughts
The hybrid WagonR could be a game-changer in Japan, but its future in India depends on government policies. If hybrid incentives improve, Maruti’s affordable hybrid tech could make the WagonR Hybrid a reality for Indian buyers.
