Hatchback Sales Rise 41% In First Half

Maruti Suzuki has recorded a sharp recovery in hatchback sales during the first half of financial year 2026-27. The company’s overall hatchback volumes increased 41% between April and September 2026, signalling renewed demand for smaller cars even as SUVs continue to dominate India’s passenger vehicle market.

The growth was seen across multiple hatchback categories, with entry-level hatchbacks registering particularly strong gains.

Entry Hatchback Sales Surge 86%

Maruti’s entry hatchback sales increased 86% during H1 FY27, while sales of mid-hatchbacks rose 40%. The company also reported a 39.8% increase in mini-car sales during September.

In September alone, Maruti’s mini, small and mid-hatchback categories together recorded 91,887 units, representing a 24% year-on-year increase.

The mini-car portfolio includes models such as the Alto, S-Presso and Celerio. The small hatchback category includes the WagonR, Swift and Dzire, while the Baleno represents the mid-hatchback segment.

Baleno, Swift And Dzire Continue To Drive Demand

The refreshed Baleno has also received a strong response, with Maruti reporting 25,000 units sold during its first month after the update.

The Dzire remained Maruti’s best-selling model during the first half despite supply constraints. The Swift has also continued to record strong monthly volumes, according to the company.

The numbers indicate that demand has not shifted entirely towards SUVs, with a significant section of Indian buyers continuing to prefer hatchbacks and sedans.

SUV Sales Grow Even Faster

While hatchbacks have made a strong comeback, SUVs remain Maruti’s fastest-growing major vehicle category.

SUV sales increased 56% during H1 FY27, with Maruti selling around 56,000 SUVs every month during the period. The company’s SUV portfolio includes models such as the Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, e Vitara, Invicto, Jimny and Victoris.

SUVs now account for around 57% of India’s passenger vehicle market.

GST Changes Help Smaller Cars

Maruti has linked part of the improvement in vehicle demand to the GST changes introduced last year. The lower tax burden has helped improve affordability, particularly for smaller passenger vehicles.

The company has also benefited from stronger production and supplies following the commissioning of its new manufacturing facility.

Maruti Records Strong H1 Sales

Maruti’s overall domestic sales reached around 11 lakh units during H1 FY27. Its domestic sales of 5,65,201 units in the second quarter were the highest recorded by the company in any quarter.

The numbers point towards a broad recovery in India’s passenger vehicle market, with both SUVs and smaller cars contributing to growth.

Summary

Maruti Suzuki’s hatchback sales increased 41% in H1 FY27, led by an 86% rise in entry-level hatchbacks and 40% growth in mid-hatchbacks. September mini, small and mid-hatchback sales reached 91,887 units. SUVs continued to grow faster at 56%, while GST changes and stronger supplies supported Maruti’s overall sales recovery.
