Mahindra Thar Electric Spied For The First Time: Vision T Design, Interiors Revealed
Mahindra Thar Electric Spotted Testing
Mahindra’s upcoming electric Thar has been spotted testing on Indian roads for the first time, giving enthusiasts the clearest look yet at the production version of the SUV. The heavily camouflaged test vehicle appears closely related to the Vision T concept and retains the boxy, rugged styling associated with the Thar family.

The upcoming model is expected to become the electric successor to the current-generation Thar, although Mahindra has not yet confirmed its final name, specifications or launch date.
Vision T Design Makes It To The Test Vehicle
The front-end design of the test mule carries several elements seen on the Vision T concept. These include a wide grille, squared-off headlamp housings, a flat bonnet and a chunky front bumper.
The SUV also gets prominent wheel arches, an upright windscreen and large rectangular ORVMs. Unlike the futuristic concept, the test vehicle appears more production-friendly, with conventional side steps and road-oriented tyres.
The vehicle spotted appears to be a five-door SUV, continuing the more practical format introduced with the Thar Roxx.
No Spare Wheel At The Rear
One interesting detail is the absence of an externally mounted spare wheel on the test vehicle. The production version could eventually receive a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, similar to the Thar Roxx, but this has not been confirmed.
The rear also features a large upright tailgate and high-mounted stop lamp. The test vehicle appears to use temporary rear lighting units.
Interior Gets A More Practical Layout
The interior spy images reveal a digital instrument display and large grab handles near the A-pillars. While most of the dashboard remains hidden, the cabin appears to be moving towards a more conventional layout compared with the original Thar.e concept.
The Vision T concept featured a large portrait-oriented infotainment screen, a separate digital instrument display and physical controls. Mahindra could potentially use a similar setup in the production SUV.
There is also a possibility of sharing infotainment technology with other upcoming Mahindra SUVs, although the company has not confirmed this.
New Platform Could Support Multiple Powertrains
The biggest technical change is expected underneath the skin. The Vision T is based on Mahindra’s NU_IQ architecture, which can support electric, petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains.
This is different from the original Thar.e concept, which was developed around Mahindra’s INGLO-based architecture.
The new platform can also support all-wheel drive, making it particularly interesting for a future electric Thar.
Launch Could Happen From 2028
Mahindra’s NU_IQ-based SUVs are expected to enter production from 2027 onwards. Since the Thar electric has only now begun appearing in road tests, its launch could happen in 2028 or later.
The latest sighting nevertheless confirms that Mahindra is moving ahead with an electric SUV that combines the Thar’s rugged identity with a new-generation electric platform.
Summary
Mahindra’s upcoming Thar electric has been spotted testing for the first time, revealing strong Vision T-inspired styling, a five-door body and a more conventional cabin. The SUV is expected to use Mahindra’s flexible NU_IQ platform, which can support electric and combustion powertrains. With road testing now underway, the electric Thar could arrive around 2028, although Mahindra has yet to confirm the launch timeline.
