Kia Motors has officially announced its upcoming compact SUV, the Syros, anticipated to hit the global market in the coming weeks with a full launch likely early next year. This model, previously codenamed “AY,” is set to offer both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric powertrain options, enhancing Kia’s presence in the competitive compact SUV segment.

Kia's Next Compact SUV Is Officially Called Kia Syros

A Name with Purpose: Why “Syros” and Not “Clavis”?

Initially, Kia had considered naming this model “Clavis,” but the idea was eventually shelved. Sources indicate that Kia chose to align the Syros with its existing SUV naming convention, in which models like the Seltos and Sonet start with an “S.” This decision differentiates Kia’s compact SUV line from its MPV models, such as the Carens and Carnival, which start with a “C.” By adhering to this nomenclature, Kia strengthens its branding, making the Syros instantly recognizable within its SUV portfolio.

Design Cues from the EV9 and Carnival

Kia has taken inspiration from its larger models, the EV9 and Carnival, in crafting the Syros’s design. Sporting a boxy silhouette with a flat roof and upright rear, the Syros stands out with a spacious cabin and a premium exterior appearance. These elements set it apart from other compact SUVs and provide a luxurious feel aimed at urban families and travelers seeking comfort and style.

The Syros is positioned above sub-4m SUVs like the Hyundai Venue and Maruti Brezza, aiming to cater to those who prefer a roomier, more sophisticated vehicle without moving to a full-sized SUV. The added interior room also distinguishes it from Kia’s own Sonet, making it a viable option for those who prioritize passenger comfort.

Focus on Rear-Seat Comfort

One of the unique selling points of the Syros is its emphasis on rear-seat space and comfort. Unlike other compact SUVs in its class, Kia has designed the Syros with a spacious backseat to accommodate passengers more comfortably. Reports suggest the Syros may even offer more cabin room than the Seltos, catering to a market that values practicality and relaxation on the go.

Powertrain Versatility: ICE and Electric Options

The Kia Syros will offer both ICE and electric powertrain options, making it versatile in catering to different consumer preferences. Although Kia plans to launch with ICE engines initially, an electric version will follow. Both versions will share the same platform and will be available in a front-wheel-drive configuration, making it accessible for urban environments and light off-roading.

Final Thoughts

The Syros is a strategic addition to Kia’s compact SUV lineup, combining comfort, style, and versatility. With its thoughtfully designed interior, dual powertrain options, and branding alignment, Kia aims to make the Syros a compelling choice in the competitive compact SUV market.
