Apple is rumored to be replacing Sony with Samsung as its camera sensor supplier, a potential shift that could revolutionize iPhone photography. Reports suggest Samsung is developing a cutting-edge 3-layer stacked image sensor for Apple, promising improved performance, noise reduction, and faster photo processing.

Key Features of Samsung’s 3-Layer Stacked Sensor

  • Photodiode (PD): Captures light to form the image.
  • Transfer (TR): Reduces noise for enhanced image clarity.
  • Logic: Handles computational photography for efficient processing.

This innovative design integrates processing units directly onto the sensor, enabling quicker photo capture and improved image quality, particularly in challenging conditions.

Implications for Apple’s Supply Chain

If the switch happens, it will end Apple’s decade-long partnership with Sony, which has supplied camera sensors since 2011. The move aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of reducing dependency on third-party suppliers by developing in-house components like Proxima Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips.

Samsung’s Mobile Photography Innovations

While Samsung’s rumored sensor could elevate iPhone photography, the company is also making strides with its own devices. The upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra is expected to feature a groundbreaking 500MP sensor, pushing mobile photography to unprecedented levels.

Future iPhone Developments

The iPhone 18, slated for a 2026 release, could debut Samsung’s 3-layer stacked sensor, alongside variable aperture technology and the advanced A20 chipset. Before that, the iPhone 17 Pro models are rumored to feature A19 Pro chips, signaling Apple’s continued focus on innovation.
