The most recent leaks regarding the iPhone 15 have revealed surprising design choices, including a specialized periscope camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and new Action button controls. However, the most significant surprise is the enhanced compatibility of these iPhones with various standards.
iPhone 15 Leaks
According to reliable source ChargerLab, all models of the iPhone 15 will support fast wireless charging at 15W using the Qi2 standard. This represents a major shift for Apple, as wireless charging had previously been limited to 7.5W, and only Apple MagSafe accessories could achieve 15W charging.
The combination of fast wireless charging and the iPhone 15’s utilization of USB-C wired charging marks new territory for Apple’s iPhones.
ChargerLab explains, “The new Qi2 wireless charging module costs less than one-third the price of Apple’s MagSafe module, and manufacturers are not required to be MFi members.” This means that more affordable and faster wireless charging accessories will be available on the market. Qi2 is based on Apple’s MagSafe standard and incorporates the same magnetic ring for secure attachment.
Apple & Its Lightning Connector
Although EU law mandates Apple to adopt USB-C by December 2024, they could have continued using the Lightning connector for the iPhone 15 and the expected iPhone 16 (scheduled for launch in September 2023 and 2024, respectively).
Furthermore, it is anticipated that iOS 17 will enable the installation of apps from third-party app stores. The European Union has been advocating for Apple to open up the App Store, and this change was not expected until later, but Apple is now embracing it.
Considering the multitude of changes happening at Apple, prospective upgraders to the iPhone 15 have much to look forward to. And one can only speculate on the changes that will accompany the iPhone 16.
