Apple unveiled the highly anticipated iOS 17 during the WWDC 2023 event, introducing a range of exciting updates and improvements for iPhone users.
One of the notable additions is Standby mode, which transforms the iPhone into a functional bedside clock equipped with widgets. Additionally, the Messages app has received a complete redesign, offering users a fresh and intuitive interface.

Live Voicemail with Real-Time Transcription
iOS 17 introduces a new Live Voicemail feature with live transcription, allowing users to check real-time translations of recorded messages.
Enhanced FaceTime Functionality
Users can now leave video messages on FaceTime if a call is missed. iMessages receive updates with search filters and the ability to reply to messages by swiping the text. Additionally, audio messages are automatically transcribed. Location sharing is also made easier with a new location sharing feature in iMessage. The iMessage app gets a new design, with apps and the camera now hidden behind a + button.
Offline Maps and Improved AirDrop
Users can now utilize maps in offline mode, providing navigation capabilities even without an internet connection. Stickers can be created from any photo, and “Live stickers” can be made using motion photos. Stickers now work in third-party apps as well. AirDrop sees improvements, allowing users to swap phone numbers with others simply by bringing their phones close together.
SharePlay and Journal App
SharePlay enables iPhone users to sync up livestreams or music, enhancing the shared viewing and listening experience. Apple also introduced a new app called Journal, which allows users to save moments and schedule notifications for the start or end of their day. Journal entries and suggestions are locked and protected by end-to-end encryption for privacy.

The following devices are eligible for the iOS 17 software update: iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro series, iPhone 12 series, iPhone 12 Pro series, iPhone 13 series, iPhone 13 Pro series, iPhone 14 series, and iPhone 14 Pro series.
Discontinued Updates for Certain iPhones
Apple discontinues software updates for older iPhones due to various factors, such as the age of the devices and the requirement of up-to-date hardware to support new features and additions. Devices announced between November 2015 and November 2017, including iPhone 6, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, original iPhone SE model, final iPod touch, second-generation iPad Air, and fourth-generation iPad mini, will no longer receive major updates.
