IndiGo and the Air India Group will progressively shift selected domestic and international flights from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The move is designed to support the redevelopment of Terminal 1 at Mumbai’s existing airport while creating additional capacity for future aviation growth.

When Will Flights Move to Navi Mumbai Airport?
The transition will take place in phases rather than through a single transfer.
Air India Express plans to begin operations from Navi Mumbai in December 2026 with four daily domestic flights. It expects to start shifting selected international services to the new airport from January 2027, with the wider transition expected to continue into the summer 2027 schedule.
IndiGo plans to begin international operations from NMIA in February 2027 and progressively transfer 12 daily international departures from Mumbai airport. The process is expected to run until July 2027, subject to final coordination and the necessary operating approvals.
Which IndiGo International Routes Will Shift?
IndiGo plans to transfer existing international services from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai covering 11 destinations: Bahrain, Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, Madinah, Kuwait, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Muscat, Dhaka and Jakarta.
The airline also plans to introduce a daily service to Kathmandu. This will bring its international network at Navi Mumbai to 12 destinations by July 2027.
Selected domestic flights will also move to support connections between domestic and international services at the new airport. IndiGo expects the additional capacity at CSMIA to create room for further international expansion across Asia, Africa and Europe.
Air India Express plans to progressively move services to Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam, Doha, Muscat and Sharjah. The planned transition of Kuwait services remains subject to the required approvals.
Why Is Mumbai Airport Redeveloping Terminal 1?
The relocation is linked to the planned redevelopment of Terminal 1 at CSMIA, which is targeted for completion by 2030.
The modernised terminal is expected to increase annual passenger-handling capacity from approximately 15 million to 20 million. Shifting some operations to Navi Mumbai will help accommodate the redevelopment while allowing airlines to maintain connectivity.
The plan forms part of a wider effort to distribute air traffic between Mumbai’s two airports as passenger demand increases.
What Does This Mean for Passengers?
Passengers will need to check their tickets carefully because flights currently operating from Mumbai airport may move to Navi Mumbai in the coming months. The two airports are separate locations, so travellers should verify the departure airport before leaving for their journey.
The phased shift could expand international connectivity from Navi Mumbai while freeing capacity at CSMIA for redevelopment and additional services. However, final transfer dates and individual flight schedules will depend on airline announcements and operational approvals.
Summary: IndiGo and the Air India Group will progressively shift selected flights to Navi Mumbai International Airport from December 2026. Air India Express plans four daily domestic flights initially, while IndiGo will move 12 daily international departures between February and July 2027. The transition will support the redevelopment of Mumbai airport’s Terminal 1 and expand Navi Mumbai’s role in the region’s aviation network.
