Kerala is witnessing a transformative infrastructure project with the construction of the Aroor-Thuravoor elevated highway on National Highway 66. Stretching 12.75 km and spanning six lanes, this elevated corridor is set to become India’s longest flyover, revolutionizing connectivity in southern India. The project is being executed under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at a cost of Rs 2,200 crore.

Rapid Progress, On Track for 2026

The massive project has reached 65 percent completion, with final delivery targeted for May 2026. Construction efforts are in full swing, supported by a workforce of 2,500 labourers and 350 machines operating round the clock. All 360 pillars and 3,000 girders have been constructed, and girder erection is currently underway. Additionally, three exit ramps and a toll plaza are under development.

Boost to Inter-State Travel and Trade

Once operational, the elevated corridor will significantly enhance road travel between Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala, ensuring faster, smoother, and cost-effective transportation across state borders. This will not only benefit commuters but also reduce fuel consumption and boost regional trade and logistics.

Traffic Woes During Construction

Despite the long-term benefits, the ongoing construction has created serious traffic congestion on the existing four-lane stretch of NH 66. Daily commuters face long tailbacks and delays, turning the area into a choke point. To address this, the NHAI has approved the strengthening of two alternate routesThuravoor-Kumbalangi and Thuravoor-Makkekadavu — to serve as temporary diversions.

A Future-Ready Infrastructure Milestone

Upon completion, the Aroor-Thuravoor elevated highway will not just set a national record for the longest flyover but also transform Kerala’s road infrastructure, offering a sustainable solution to urban traffic and supporting long-term economic development along NH 66.
