From September 1 to October 31, 2024, Indian Railways sold tickets throughout the holiday season, bringing in ₹12,159.35 crore.
During this time, there were holidays like Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra, and Diwali, which usually result in more people using the railways.

Indian Railways Report Revenue of ₹12,159.35 Crore: All Thanks To Festive Season
In answer to a question in the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided zone-by-zone information on ticket sales revenue.
Indian Railways carried 143.71 crore passengers between September 1 and November 10, with the central zone seeing the most passengers—31.63 crore.
With 26.13 crore passengers, the western zone finished in second, while with 24.67 crore passengers, the eastern zone came in third.
With 1.48 crore passengers, the south-east central zone recorded the fewest.
Indian Railways Launched 7663 Special Trains To Accommodate Holiday Traffic
Between October 1 and November 30, Indian Railways launched 7,663 special train services to accommodate the holiday traffic. This was a 73% increase over the 4,429 extra journeys that were added during the same time period in 2023.
957.24 lakh non-suburban passengers traveled between October 24 and November 4, representing a 33.91 lakh increase over the 923.33 lakh passengers who traveled during the same time the previous year.
With more than 1.2 crore passengers on the train on November 4, comprising 19.43 lakh reserved passengers and more than 1.01 crore unreserved non-suburban passengers, it was the most passengers in a single day in 2024.
To handle the increase in passengers, 207 special trains ran on November 3 and 203 special trains on November 4.
With more people traveling from rural to urban regions for employment and returning home for religious holidays, the rising passenger count reflects an increase in India’s economic activity.
