HP unveiled a new subscription service on Thursday that provides printers, ink, and a set number of printed pages each month for a monthly fee. However, the service comes with extensive monitoring of user activity and a multi-year commitment.
Monthly Plans Cover Printer, Ink, Pages
Pricing for HP’s “All-In Plan” starts at $6.99 per month, which includes an HP Envy 6020e printer and 20 printed pages. More expensive tiers offer plans up to 700 printed pages per month with an HP OfficeJet Pro rental for $35.99 monthly.
The subscription bundles the printer, ink cartridge refills when running low, and the allotted pages into a single recurring charge. HP touts the predictability of costs and simplicity for families and small businesses.
Enforced Web Connection Enables Monitoring
While simplifying ink purchases, users give up privacy and control in exchange. HP requires subscribers keep printers web-connected for continual monitoring.
Through the mandatory internet link, HP tracks ink levels, page counts, and document types printed. The company says it needs the constant connection for “unauthorized use prevention,” but will also gather data on devices used to initiate prints and “any other metrics” HP adds to gathering.
Users cannot perform basic offline printing without HP surveillance under the terms of service. The privacy policy also allows sharing data with ad partners.
Multi-Year Commitment Despite Lack of Support
Despite no repair, replacement or on-site service coverage, subscribers must commit to a full three years of monthly payments under HP’s plan rules.
Early termination fees equivalent to the remaining monthly charges apply if breaking the 36-month agreement.
