A Landmark Investment for India’s Digital Future
In a major boost to India’s digital economy, tech giant Google will invest $6 billion (approximately ₹51,000 crore) to build a 1 gigawatt (GW) hyperscale data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This will be Google’s largest-ever data centre project in India and among the biggest in Asia, both in terms of capacity and investment.
This facility will not only bolster India’s digital infrastructure but also support Google’s global services like cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and other advanced technologies.
Powering Data with Clean Energy
A significant portion of the investment—$2 billion (about ₹17,000 crore)—will be dedicated to developing renewable energy infrastructure to power the data centre. This aligns with Google’s global commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality.
These energy sources will ensure that the hyperscale data centre runs efficiently, while also minimizing its environmental impact. It reflects a broader trend among tech giants to build eco-conscious digital infrastructure.
What Does a 1 GW Data Centre Represent?
The 1 GW capacity refers to the power usage of the facility, not its storage size. A data centre of this scale is capable of hosting tens of thousands of servers.
For example, if it houses 50,000 servers, each storing around 10 terabytes (TB) of data, the total storage capacity would reach approximately 500 million gigabytes (GB). That’s enough to serve hundreds of millions of users globally with AI, cloud, and other digital services.
Part of Google’s $75 Billion Global Expansion
This Visakhapatnam project is part of Alphabet’s $75 billion (₹6.37 lakh crore) global investment plan for 2025 aimed at expanding its data infrastructure footprint across key regions including Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
India’s inclusion in this network reflects its rising strategic importance in the global cloud ecosystem, especially at a time when tech companies are reconfiguring supply chains and operations due to geopolitical and trade uncertainties.
