Google’s Hybrid Work Mandate for Remote Teams

Google has informed several of its remote employees that continuing to work from home full-time is no longer an option. As per internal documents cited by CNBC, staff in key departments must now follow a hybrid schedule—reporting to the office at least three times a week—or face termination.

Affected Departments and Relocation Options

Teams such as Google Technical Services and People Operations are among those impacted. Remote employees in these roles have been given the option to relocate within 50 miles of a Google office, with a one-time relocation package. Alternatively, they can opt for a voluntary exit, according to CNBC reports.

End of the Pandemic-Era Flexibility

This change marks a clear shift in how Google views remote work post-pandemic. Tech giants are increasingly pushing for return-to-office mandates, citing the need for in-person collaboration. Human Resources teams at Google have reportedly been told that refusal to comply with the new policy will result in job termination.

Leadership’s Push for Office Presence

Co-founder Sergey Brin has been vocal about his preference for employees working from office. Earlier this year, he reportedly stated that being in the office daily boosts productivity and supports innovation, especially in AI-related initiatives. Brin even suggested that working 60 hours per week is optimal for performance.

Google’s Official Stand on Collaboration

A Google spokesperson emphasized that in-person collaboration remains key to problem-solving and innovation. Some teams have therefore asked remote employees living near offices to start following the hybrid schedule. The company’s messaging aligns with a wider trend across Silicon Valley, where firms are rolling back remote-first policies.

Changing Work Norms in Big Tech

Google’s hybrid work enforcement is a strong signal of changing times in the tech world. While remote work offered flexibility during the pandemic, the industry now seems to be swinging back toward structured, office-based models—with innovation and teamwork cited as driving factors.
