Google is set to broaden its Pixel 9 lineup with the introduction of three distinct models later this year, according to a recent leak. Tipster OnLeaks, via 91 Mobiles, revealed a surprise addition of a third “XL” Pixel 9 to the lineup, signaling a departure from the tech giant’s previous launch strategies.

Google Pixel 9 Series Can Have A Surprise: A New 'XL' Variant, Total 3 Variants Expected!

Leaked Details and Strategy Shift

The leak suggests that Google will offer two Pixel 9 Pro units alongside the newly introduced XL variant. Contrary to earlier assumptions, the base Pixel 9 will feature only two camera sensors and a 6.03-inch display, aligning it more closely with Apple’s iPhone in terms of design and product range. Notably, Google’s decision to resurrect the XL moniker hints at a strategic shift, with the XL model measuring slightly shorter than its predecessor, the Pixel 8 Pro.

The addition of a second Pro unit and the resizing of the entire lineup appears to cater to consumers with varying preferences regarding phone size and camera capabilities. This strategy shakeup represents a significant departure from Google’s traditional approach of releasing one or two flagship smartphone models, marking a potential milestone in the company’s smartphone evolution.

Implications and Industry Response

If accurate, this leak signifies a significant shift in Google’s smartphone plans, potentially resulting in the release of five different Pixel phones this year, including the Pixel 8a, Pixel Fold 2, and the Pixel 9 range. Additionally, recent updates regarding the Pixel 8a’s availability indicate that Google may be preparing to unveil the device at its upcoming Google I/O event in May.

Despite the evolving landscape, Google continues to innovate and enhance its smartphone offerings, evident in the addition of new AI functionality to its budget handset, the Pixel 6a. With competitors like Samsung also introducing AI-driven features across their device portfolios, the smartphone market is poised for further advancements and enhancements in the coming months.
