The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has submitted its final recommendations to the Centre proposing a caller name identification model to display caller names by default for mobile subscribers on request.
This facility should be provided by all telcos as a supplementary service as per TRAI, which has outlined technical architecture required. The feature will essentially show the name used for registration alongside the calling number.
To Rival Commercial Offerings?
Once commercially launched after government directive, default caller ID has the potential to compete with paid caller identification apps like Truecaller which currently dominate the space.
Telcos and handset brands may bundle it as value addition. But its effectiveness will depend on national scaling and consistency by all operators in maintaining updated databases.
